The Protective Coating

Rust is always a concern with metal and that is why metal roofs have a protective coating over them.  It’s a seal that prevents rusting.  So it’s very important that the coating remains in top condition.  It can wear down over time, it can get scratched or chipped.

Seams and Connectors

Metal roofs are installed using panels, which means they must be connected together in some way. Ideally the panels are locked together so there are no exposed fasteners or seams.  Some metal roofs are not installed this way and they do have exposed seams and fasteners.  It’s important these be checked regularly for rust and splits or openings.

Safety of Metal Roofs

The big caution with metal roofs is how slippery they can be. It is imperative that anyone who goes on a metal roof be properly trained and often must be harnessed.  If there is any moisture on the roof of any kind it will be slippery.  Even a dry roof is slippery compared to any other roof type.
