Eavestroughs have a very specific function: Keep water away from the building. Why is that so important?  Water damages buildings in many ways.  It can damage the outside, inside, top, and bottom. It can destroy the contents in the building and affect people’s health.

Drainage is extremely important. When water builds up on a roof, or in gutters and eavestroughs,  the structure gets warped and damaged, and can actually cause even bigger problems.  

Clogged Eavestroughs

When eavestroughs or gutters are clogged the water can no longer drain properly and be channelled away from the building or townhouse.

• Water backs up onto the roof and sits there.
• Water overflows and goes towards the building. Over time this causes damage to siding and windows.
• Water overflows away from the building and causes damage to any surroundings.

Damaged Eavestroughs

Gutters or eavestroughs get damaged when clogged for too long.  This is due to:

• The pressure of the mounting water
• Water freezing and expanding
• Debris build up
• Nests and vegetation

Inproper Drainage

• Damaged shingles: cracked, buckled, lifted
• Damaged siding
• Damaged foundation
• Soil erosion
• Condensation and mold in attics
• Soaked, rotted wood anywhere around the building like decks and patios
• Liability from entire eavestrough separating from the building structure and falling

Birds and Other Pests

Animals that are typically found in gutters:

• Bird nests with our without eggs
• Raccoons
• Opossums
• Squirrels
• Chipmunks
• Wasp, hornet, bee nests
• Mice and rats
• Mosquitos
• Earthworms

Vegetation is another life form that will plant itself in a clogged gutter.  Weed seeds spread most easily by the wind.  All it takes is a tuft of seeds to land in debris and a weed quickly grows.  The roots grow even faster and they are aggressive.  They poke holes in aluminum and puncture roof membranes to find water. When it comes to eavestroughs, weeds are not welcome.

Eavestroughs are designed to drain water off the roof and funnel it out of the way. To keep them functioning, they must be kept clear of debris and leaves. Otherwise they become the perfect environment for various kinds of damage.
